Hayes & Yeading moved up a place but remain in the relegation places after a goalless draw at Holloways Park against fellow strugglers Cambridge City.

The United management team made two changes from the side beaten at Kings Langley with Melanious Mullarkey coming in for the injured Jack Smith while Dylan Kearney came in for Mahlondo Martin who dropped to the bench.

It was to be the visitors from Cambridge who made a lot of the early running, earning corner kicks in almost double figures in the first 15 minutes, the major plus for United being that despite this our defence was not breached.

The Lilywhites had a great chance however in the 16th minute when from a throw-in on the left side the ball was lofted in to Ryan Sharman in the United box but with just Danny Boness to beat he blazed over the top. Two minutes later another chance for the visitors went begging. Matthew Stevens lobbed the ball forwards, Boness came to gather but realised he was too near the edge of the box, the United stopper was however beaten to the bouncing ball by Charlie Woolfe who despite being wide had a gaping goal to aim for, his effort going across the face and wide of the far post.

These two openings seemed to spark some life into the United attack as within a minute Mitchell Weiss had forced a saved from the Lilywhites stopper Enol Ordonez who did well to push wide the strikers volley. Ordonez was again in action a couple of minutes later when debutant Melanious Mullarkey won the ball in midfield, played it right to Ryan Hope who cut inside and hit a low shot from 20 yards that the ‘keeper held.

Ordonez was quickly in action again, this time holding a low driven effort from Josh Chamberlain after good approach play from Weiss while with half an hour gone a poor pass in midfield saw the visitors shift the ball forwards to Woolfe, his 20 yard shot on the turn going just wide of the United upright.

A chance apiece came during the final five minutes of the half with a Dylan Kearney effort that actually got past Ordonez being cleared away by a defender inside the six yard box and then right on the whistle a cross in from the left side saw Stevens get his head in front of his marker only to head wide of the target.

A change of personnel at the break saw a positional shuffle as Cole Brown replaced the injured Callum Adebiyi.

Both sides made a quick start after the break, a poorly punched out corner by Ordonez dropped to Weiss but his volley was too high from 18 yards and this was quickly followed at the other end by the ball being played wide left to Buster Harradine who fired in a low drive that Boness got down to quickly to push out with his defence completing the clearance.

Just before the hour mark Ordonez pulled off one of the best saves in a United game this season to deny Kearney. Brown and Mullarkey worked the ball well down the right flank before finding Kearney in the middle, the strikers’ shot looking to have got past the ‘keeper only for a strong hand to reach back and push the ball around the post.

25 minutes without a real opening at either end followed with United finishing the stronger but unable to break down the stubborn visitors defence. Weiss was inches too high with a header from Kearney’s cross and then in the fifth minute of time added on, Mullarkey and Brown again combined down the right with Brown cutting into the box only to be denied once again by Ordonez who saved well, capping a superb personal performance by the Lilywhites stopper.
