Hayes & Yeading’s trio of injured strikers was a contributing factor on Wednesday evening as Staines Town came to the SKYex and duly took away all three points, much as United had done in the opening fixture at the Swans Wheatsheaf Park ground.

United started the game well and after just eight minutes Swans ‘keeper Sam Woolford was required to touch a Lugnius Zalpys free-kick around the post and then ten minutes later a neat exchange in an advanced position saw Mustafa Ahmadi feed the ball to Jake Sobalak who saw his first time strike held by Woolford.

United almost came undone from a set piece in the 25th minute though when a corner from the left by Jack Torbett was met in the centre by Gabriel Piorkowski, the defenders header taking a firm ricochet before flying straight into Alex Ravenhill’s grateful arms.

Within a minute Sobalak was again denied by Woolford, the ‘keeper doing well to block out the United man’s first time effort on the turn. United still pushed on for an opener, Josh Blaize brought the ball down well and played it right to Elijah Manning who fired inches over form just outside the box.

The ball was quickly launched forwards once more by United, Blaize beat the on-coming Woolford to the ball but his lofted effort didn’t have enough strength behind it which allowed Joe Iguchi to comfortably collect and run the ball out from inside the six yard box.

Blaize went even closer in the final minutes of the first half as a low drive that looked to be heading for the far corner was touched onto the face of the post by Woolford capping a fine first half by the Swans stopper.

Having been in the ascendancy during the first half, United came out rather slowly after the break, either that or the Swans sped up! Just four minutes after the re-start Ravenhill was called into action when Imoru fired in a low 20 yard drive, the United ‘keeper pushing the effort out and quickly swallowing up the loose ball.

Minutes later though he could do nothing as Swans skipper Joe Tuck received the ball on the right corner of the United box and fired in an unstoppable dipping volley that went into the far corner off the underside of the crossbar to give the visitors the lead.

Five minutes later another Zalpys free-kick needed attention from Woolford who pushed the effort over the top and as the game reach the three-quarter mark United almost gifted Staines a second, Anthony Byfield’s stray pass across the back being picked off by Nathaniel Olawole, the Swans striker proceeding to screw his effort well wide when well placed to test Ravenhill.

United continued to push for an equaliser, a fine run down the right by substitute Simeon Olarein saw him feed Sobalak who helped the ball to Nana Adarkwa who saw his angled drive tipped wide by Woolford. Sobalak then brought the ball down well and found Blaize ten yards out, the United man screwing his shot wide of the target without troubling Woolford.

Four minutes from time United finally beat Woolford as an Adarkwa free-kick from the left corner of the box flew past the Staines stopper only for the ball to come back into play off the crossbar, Sobalak firing over as the ball came at him at pace off the woodwork.

United were then sick with the ultimate sucker punch as a break away on the left side saw Torbett cross to Olawole, the striker connecting better this time to smash a flying volley past Ravenhill which saw all the points being taken back to Wheatsheaf Park.
