Two of the counties top under 18 sides, Hayes & Yeading United and Bedfont Sports pitched their new look sides’ forwards at the SKYex on opening day and it was a late strike from the visitors that saw them take all three points home with them as both clubs’ look to find their feet again with brand new line-ups.

A tentative start from both teams saw more passes go astray than actually connect and for the first 25 minutes neither goalkeeper really needed to take part with the game being played out pretty much in front of each defence.

As the half hour approached with barely an opening thus far, it was like London Buses as two good chances for United came along at once. Jayde Alcendor slid the ball through to Wesley Tobino who saw his shot tipped wide by Sports ‘keeper Devon Gordon and then a minute later Joe Gasper and Stan Cargill exchanged passes in the approach play with the former hitting a low drive that Gordon blocked away with an outstretched leg.

The visitors first effort to test Joseph Powell in the United goal came in the 36th minute when a snapshot from the right corner of the United area by Isaac Thompson saw Powell hold competently at his near post.

Despite probably having a smaller share of possession in the half, the partial openings mostly came United’s way. Alcendor and Tobino combined on the right to create an opening for Cargill only for Gordon to push his well struck drive away.

A minute remained in the half and we almost had one of those comical football moments when Gordon stood on the ball and fell to the ground, Cargill nipped in but Gordon showed great presence of mind to hook his foot around the ball from on the ground to take it away from the United striker.

Cargill was not to be denied United’s first goal of the campaign though, in stoppage time the striker ran onto a smart Gasper through-ball before tucking it neatly past Gordon to give United a half-time advantage.

Sadly for United they did not appear to come out in the second half with the same presence on the field and it was the visitors who looked more likely to score from the off.

Powell held a Ryan Snook drive in the opening seconds of the half and then a couple of minutes later he was beaten by a low Thompson shot that went across the United goal, struck the post and bounced back into Powell’s gratefully arms.

United did create an opening of their own minutes later when Tobino collected the ball in the “D” and fed it to Gasper but his shot had little power and was straight at Gordon who dealt with it comfortably.

Then just a couple of minutes before the hour mark the visitors deservedly drew level as Didi Ndombe collected a shot that had ricocheted to him and coolly slotted past Powell from ten yards.

A double save from Powell on the hour mark kept United level, the stopper initially parrying a Frankie Church effort that he may feel he should have caught, the loose ball falling to Thompson who was denied by Powell’s bravery in getting down to block away the point blank effort with his defence finishing the tidying exercise.

A close shave a piece followed around the midway point in the half, Snook broke into the United box and fired across goal but wide while at the other end, Tobino got his head to a left side free-kick but his effort was just too high to trouble Gordon.

Then with six minutes remaining, scored their second and again it was Ndombe sliding the ball past Powell as the Sports player was played in neatly behind the United defence.

A chance of a late equaliser for United in the 90th minute was foiled by Gordon in the Sports goal who capped a fine game by pushing away a Cargill drive from the left corner of the box and it was the visitors who took victory as referee Clifford brought proceedings to a close.
